PUNCTUATION OF COORDINATE CONJUNTIONS
PUNCTUATION OF COORDINATE CONJUNTIONS
AND, BUT, FOR, NOR, OR, SO, YET
- When the coordinate conjunctions (and, but, for, nor, or, so, yet) gain two sentences, they are preceded by a comma:
"I am poor, but I’m happy."
"It's raining, so I won't go out."
"It's raining, yet we'll go out."
"I am going to Istanbul, and we'll meet there."
- If we don’t use a coordinating conjunction, we can compound senteces with a semicolon:
“I like chocolate; my brother hates it.”
“I like chocolate, but my brother hates it.”
