PUNCTUATION OF CONJUNCTIVE ADVERBS
SIMPLE CONJUNCTIVE ADVERBS
Simple conjunctive adverbs are used for the establishment of compund sentences, and please care about punctuation of these simple conjunctive adverbs:
also, however, otherwise, moreover, then, accordingly, therefore, nevertheless, thus, besides, consequently, furthermore,henceforth, likewise, fortunately, so, yet, next, meanwhile, still, thus, besides, hence, instead, consequently, indeed
Each conjunction must be displayed between a (;) and a (,).
COMPLEX CONJUNCTIVE ADVERBS
Complex conjunctive adverbs are used for the establishment of compund sentences, and please care about punctuation of these simple conjunctive adverbs:
for example, for instance, as a result, as a consequent, on the other hand, in other words, in the mean time, that is, on the one hand, on the contrary, of course, in addition, on the contrary
A few examples for conjunctive adverbs:
ALSO:
“Istanbul is a historical city; also, it is the largest city of Turkey.”
“Istanbul is a historical city. Also, it is the largest city of Turkey.”
THEREFORE:
“You didn’t participate in the lessons; therefore, I will not let you pass the class.”
“You didn’t participate in the lessons. Therefore, I will not let you pass the class.”
FOR EXAMPLE:
“He is a famous and successful artist; for example, his artistic works are exhibited in Paris.”
“He is a famous and successful artist. For example, his artistic works are exhibited in Paris.”
ON THE OTHER HAND:
“I’m poor; on the other hand, you are rich.”
“I’m poor. On the other hand, you are rich.”
Don’t forget the fact that coordinate conjunctions are only seven in number whereas conjunctive adverbs are in many numbers.
